WATERLOO — Donald Wayne Jones, 72, passed away Wednesday (October 2, 2024) at Huntington Living Center, Waterloo, New York, with his sister by his side. In keeping with Donald's wishes, there will be no calling hours or service. A bench will be placed along the Cayuga-Seneca Trail in his memory. Donald was born May 27, 1952, the son of Emerson Eugene and Angela Frances Gorka Jones. He was the valedictorian of Waterloo High School's Class of 1970. Collegiately, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Albany State University where he studied philosophy and psychology. He worked as an inspector at Libby's in Waterloo and was also a toll collector for the NYS Thruway Authority retiring after 13 years of service. Don/Donnie/Jonesy was a warrior who faced and overcame struggles. He had a brilliant mind, a quick wit and a wry sense of humor. He was a voracious reader, a music aficionado and a serious collector of coins and comic books. He also appreciated art and especially loved Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Andy Warhol's authentic prints. Back in the day Don was a marathon runner and a cyclist. One year he and his bicycle even travelled to Ireland. An avid sports fan, he loved the Giants, the Yankees and the 76ers. He always enjoyed time in a pool and appreciated wildlife and nature in general. In the off season while working at Libby's, Donnie would take off in his yellow van to explore the USA. He was also a king of mail order shopping and a fan of Polish food, ice cream, double cheeseburgers and Momberger's Italian subs. Donald is survived by his loving sister, Karen (Donald) Moretti of Waterloo, NY; nephews Michael (Caitlin) Moretti and Matthew (Jessie) Moretti both of Buffalo, NY; niece Molly (Nick) Budding of Olean, NY; great-nephews Oliver Nicolaas Budding and Louis Bernard Moretti; stepmother Anne Costello Jones of Skaneateles, NY; uncle Duane Jones of Liverpool, NY; aunt Helen (Walter) Snyder of Ohio; several cousins; and his beloved, canine companion Penny, a rescue that Don said chose him. "Ábogado"…he will be missed. He was predeceased by his parents and faithful pup, Lucy. The family would like to thank those at Huntington Living Center for their care and kindness and helpful neighbor, Corey Markel.
