WATERLOO — William Lewis Steele, 72, passed away peacefully Thursday (June 27, 2024) at Living Center at Geneva-South. In keeping with the family's wishes, there will be no calling hours or service. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Phelps, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the organization of one's choice. William was born May 3, 1952 in Geneva, NY, the son of Lewis Crawford and Florence Guest Steele. He was a graduate of Waterloo Central Highschool and worked as a laborer at Swedish Hill Vineyard in Fayette, NY and Knapp Winery in Romulus, NY for many years. William also owned and operated Downy Flake Doughnuts in Geneva, NY. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and hunting as well as gardening. William is survived by his children, Andrew and Sandy Steele of Waterloo, NY; grandchildren Miranda, Shelby and Samuel Lavalette of Waterloo, NY; aunt Alice Koscumb of Rochester, NY; and sister-in-law Sally Steele of Gainesville, TX; several nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Betty Jean Steele; his parents; and siblings Richard Steele and Linda Witt.
