FAYETTE/WATERLOO/VARICK– Gertrude "Trudy" M. Nicastro Smith, 79, of Varick, NY, passed away peacefully Friday (August 18, 2023) at Pathway Home. In keeping with the wishes of the family, there will be no calling hours. There will be a private graveside service. Burial will be at the Canoga Cemetery, Fayette, NY. A Celebration of Life will be Sunday (September 17) from 1 PM – 4 PM at Waterloo American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pathway Home, P. O. Box 516, Seneca Falls, NY, 13148. Trudy was born January 28, 1944, in Penn Yan, NY, the daughter of Phillip and Catherine Cronk Smith. Trudy and her late husband Fred owned and operated Nicastro's Family Restaurant for 21 years along with her children. After retiring she worked for Abby Wines and Spirits, Kids Peace, Hillside, Seneca County Jail and several area restaurants. When Trudy was not working or spending time with her family, she volunteered at The Pathway Home. She loved playing cards, boardgames, gardening, Hallmark Channel and baking in her spare time. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She is survived by her husband Richard F. Smith of Geneva, NY; children Frederick "Butch" Nicastro of Sanford, MI; LeeAnn Weigand of Waterloo, NY; AnnaMarie (Rick Plucker) Nicastro, Nixon, TX; Roxanne (Bill) Goff, Ormond Beach, FL; Mary (Bob) Apgar of Waterloo, NY; Joanne (Tommy) Peralez of Alexandria, VA; Joseph (Becky) Nicastro of Albemarle, NC; Patty (Joe) Verdi of Port Byron, NY; Trudyann (Brian) Austin of West Monroe, NY; Nick (Carrie) Nicastro of Norwood, NC. Step children Richard (Terry) F. Smith, Jr. of Waterloo, NY, Michelle (Mark) Budinski of Greece, NY, Timothy P. Smith of Douglasville, GA, and Christopher (Janine) Smith of Geneva, NY. She had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren that loved their grandma. Her siblings Carl (Natalie) Smithoover of Waterloo, NY, Clayton (Loretta) Smith of Geneva, NY, Jimmy Smith of TX, Kevin (Ana) Smith of Gainesville, FL, Kenny Smith of Gainesville, FL, Richard Smith of Canandaigua, NY many cousins, nieces and nephews. Trudy was predeceased by her first husband Frederick Nicastro; siblings Bob Smith, Fred Smithoover, Shirley Strickler, Rosalyn Toby, and Clarrissa Ricci; son-in-law Jeffery Weigand and daughter-in-law Pam Nicastro.
