Waterloo - Joan M. Covert, 84, formerly of 1985 Pre-Emption St., died Thursday (January 28, 2016) at Huntington Living Center in Waterloo, with her loving family by her side. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Waterloo at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 E. River St., Waterloo, NY, 13165; Salvation Army, 41 North St., Geneva, NY, 14456, or Paralyzed Veterans of America, Donation Processing Center, 7 Mill Brook Rd., Wilton, NH, 03086. Joan was born Aug. 19, 1931 in Waterloo, the daughter of Henry and Nettie Leona Padgett Miller. She attended Waterloo High School. Joan was employed for many years with the Geneva Foundry. Leaving employment at the foundry she was employed at HMI, until her retirement. She had a great love for horses and owned several race horses. She was known for breeding and racing horses. Among the horse racing circuit, Joan was known to many as "Mom". She is survived by sons, Albert E. (Carol) Covert, Jr. of Geneva and Charles (Cindy) Covert of Manchester; daughter, Sherry (Kyle) Washburn of Geneva; grandchildren, Bart (Leah) Covert, Garrett Covert, Greta Covert, Cheryl Covert, Cassandra "Cassie" Covert, and Cale (NiKole) Covert; great-grandsons, Axel Landschoot, Brayden Covert, and Vann Oden Covert; brothers, Charles "Bud" (Jan) Miller of Ashville, NC and John "Pete" (Wanda) Miller of Glade Springs, VA; sister, Sue (Fred) Henry of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Albert E. Covert; one brother, William Miller; and one sister, Elizabeth Colegrove.
