Waterloo - Donald E. Essom, 82, of Waterloo, died Monday ( August 25, 2014) at Huntington Living Center in Waterloo. In keeping with Don's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be in Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Varick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 E. River St., Waterloo, NY, 13165. Donald was born Nov. 10, 1931 in Waterloo, the son of Edwin and Florence Foster Essom. He was a graduate of Waterloo High School. After graduating he served his country in the U. S. Army, during the Korean War. Returning from the service, he was employed with the U.S. Federal Government as an ammunition inspector, having been stationed in Far East, Europe, and many various states in the United States. He was a member of Waterloo Memorial Post 6433, V. F. W. and Warner VanRiper Post 435, American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Essom; step-daughters, Julie (John) Walker of Griffin, GA, Beth (Thomas) Castiglione of Geneva, Lynne (Lewis) Rosbaugh of Lodi, Brenda Warner of Concord, NC, Lori (Dennis) Felice of Waterloo, and Christine (Bruce) Barrows of Madison, WI; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; sister, Hazel Secor of Waterloo; brother, John (Shelia) Essom of Southern Pines, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
