WATERLOO - Doris Irene Johnston, 97, formerly of W. River Rd., Waterloo, NY, passed away on Sunday (March 22, 2026) in Charlottesville, Virginia following a brief illness.

Family and friends may call at the Coe-Genung Funeral Home, 46 W. Main St., Waterloo, N.Y. on Thursday (April 2) from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday (April 2) at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Jeffery Haugaard, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Waterloo, NY, officiating. Spring burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Waterloo, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 101 E. Williams St., Waterloo, NY, 13165.

Doris was born July 30, 1928 in Waterloo, NY, daughter of the late Arthur Maurice Jensen and Lillian Augusta MacDuffie. She was a resident of Waterloo for 94 years. She moved to Charlottesville, VA in 2022 to live with her daughter, Leah Barrett. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waterloo.

Doris worked a number of years as a county assessor and part-time at secretarial positions culminating as a legal secretary which she was quite proud of. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and crafts, especially needlepoint with many beautiful pieces that were framed for family and friends. Doris and her husband, Lee, loved to travel in their 5th wheel recreational vehicle with their beloved dogs and visited 43 of the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Leah Johnston Barrett of Charlottesville, Virginia; her sister, Karen (John) Farula of Seneca Falls, NY; and several nieces, nephew and step-grandsons.

Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Jolly in 1952; her husband of 57 years, Lee Irvin Johnston in 2013; infant son, Gary I. Johnston in 1960; and son-in-law, Michael F. Barrett in 2022.
